Davis Cup Players Attend Calgary National Bank Challenger 2023
In an exciting announcement on October 17, 2023, Calgary National Bank Challenger Tournament Director and OSTEN & VICTOR Tennis Centre CEO, Danny Da Costa, revealed that three members of Canada’s 2022 Davis Cup Championship team are set to light up the professional tennis tournament in Calgary, Alberta. The prestigious “Challenger” will take place at the OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre from November 5 to 12, 2023.
Leading the charge is Canadian tennis sensation Vasek Pospisil, who is returning to the Calgary National Bank Challenger for the third consecutive year. With a career-high Singles ranking of 25 and Doubles ranking of 4, Pospisil’s remarkable journey includes wins over top 20 players like Danill Medvedev, Andy Murray, Milos Raonic, and others. He was even named Postmedia’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2019. Currently ranked 287th in the world on the ATP Tour, Pospisil has reached the finals of three ATP Tour events and secured seven doubles titles on the ATP World Tour. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Canada’s Davis Cup victory in 2022.
Another returning star is Gabriel Diallo, who impressed as a Singles Semi-Finalist at the 2022 Calgary National Bank Challenger. Diallo, a rising star on the ATP World Tour, is currently ranked 130th in the world. His recent accomplishments include defeating Lorenzo Musetti (world #18) at the Davis Cup event in September 2023 and a stunning victory over former World #3 and 2020 US Open Champion, Dominic Thiem, en route to winning his second ATP Challenger Title at the Bratislava Challenger.
Joining them is Alexis Galarneau, a 24-year-old talent from Montreal, who will be participating in his fourth Calgary National Bank Challenger. Ranked 186th in the world, Galarneau played a pivotal role for Canada at the recent Davis Cup Finals Group Event, where he went undefeated with a 5-0 record. He also defeated World #38 Lorenzo Sonego of Italy. Galarneau’s recent achievements include reaching the finals of the Columbus Challenger and securing his first Challenger title earlier this year at the Granby Challenger.
These remarkable Canadians will be joined by international tennis stars, such as Sabine Lisicki of Germany, former World No. 12 and Wimbledon Singles Finalist, Urszula Radwanska of Poland, and former World No. 18 Benoit Paire of France. The full list of players will be officially unveiled on October 23rd at 10:30 am from the Core Shopping Centre.
