FROM:    Danny Da Costa, Chief Executive Officer

TO:          OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre Members & Program Participants

DATE:     November 13, 2020

Dear Member and Program Participant,

I am writing to provide an update and further clarity on yesterday’s memo dated November 12.

In response to the new restrictions put in place, I have sought further clarification and direction from our provincial/municipal partners. Today we have received and reviewed the Government of Alberta’s Public Health Order relating to yesterday’s announcement. At the time of yesterday’s announcement, provincial and municipal staff members did not have clarification on what was permitted.

As indicated in my memo yesterday, we needed to seek clarification from our government partners on which activities were permitted during this two-week restriction. Our early discussions with City/Provincial officials indicated that further guidance was necessary to determine whether or not group lessons, doubles play or leagues and events were permitted. We now have those answers.

We have been informed that both singles and doubles play is permitted at this time, provided that all players are maintaining a minimum of 2 meters physical distance at all times. As well, we are permitted to provide private, semi-private and group lessons, high performance training as long as participants can maintain a minimum of 2 meters distance from each other at all times. We will also resume our league match play and our club championship with some restrictions1 to follow.

1NOTE: Our tennis professionals will follow up on those restrictions in advance of the league/events. These efforts are to minimize the risk of transmission and to keep play safe.

Given yesterday’s announcement, we have written to Alberta’s Minister of Health to advocate for the continued operation of tennis clubs in our province. We want to clearly articulate that tennis is and remains a safe sport to be played during the pandemic.

These are challenging times. Many of our members and program participants have reached out to our staff offering comments and suggestions. Our staff are doing their best to answer your questions and address your concerns.  We greatly appreciate your patience at this time. While some comments are appreciated and helpful, some are inappropriate and not in keeping with our organization’s values. We must not lose sight that we need to treat people with respect. Should some of these comments continue, the organization reserves the right to consider suspending or revoking privileges and/or membership.

We are all living in an active pandemic. There will be further changes and challenges that will occur over the coming weeks and months, please stay patient.

On Monday we will communicate the new rule changes which will take effect on December 1st

Have a good weekend.

Regards,

Danny Da Costa
