Further easing of restrictions: Junior Group Programs

MEMO:  Club Update

FROM:   Danny Da Costa, Chief Executive Officer

TO:        OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre Members & Program Participants

DATE:     February 8, 2021

Dear Member & Program Participant,

On Saturday afternoon, the Government of Alberta via the media announced that limited children’s sport activities could once again resume effective Monday, February 8th, 2021 (STAGE 1 reopening). At that time, very little information was shared by the government to various media outlets and the sporting community. We have sought information from Tennis Alberta, AHS and Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Branch of the Alberta Government (SPAR), and here is what we now know effective today February 8th, 2021:

JUNIOR: Group physical activities is permitted

Children and youth will be allowed to participate in limited group activities.

Lessons, practices and physical conditioning activities are allowed for indoor and outdoor minor sports/activities and school athletics (for example, school sport activities that are outside of a physical education class or related part of the school curriculum).

Games are not allowed.

Maximum of 10 total individuals, including all coaches, trainers, and participants.

Physical distancing must be maintained between participants at all times:

o 3-metres physical distance for indoor activities

o 2-metres physical distance for outdoor activities

o coaches or trainers may enter physical distancing space for brief interactions with participants (for example, to correct form or technique)

Participants must be masked at all times, except during the training activity. Coaches and trainers must remain masked at all times.

Access to change rooms must be limited, including accelerated arrival and departure, emergencies (for example, first aid) and washroom use.

I know that some of our adult members are asking about booking courts and regular play. Please understand that all decisions are being made by the Government of Alberta at this time. While we continue to advocate for the full resumption of tennis, it is the Government of Alberta who will allow tennis facilities in the Province to resume activities.

Tennis Alberta has received confirmation from SPAR Branch this afternoon that the following activities are permitted as per updates to STAGE ONE:

Junior Programming (U18/ U16/ U14/ U12)

private one-on-one lessons

semi-private lessons with members of the same family only.

group training (Maximum of 10 total individuals, including all coaches, trainers, and participants)

o this allows for multiple group training sessions with coaches within a facility as long as proper social distancing protocols are in effect.

Adult Programming

private one-on-one lessons

semi-private lessons with members of the same family only.

Family Programming

one-on-one household training (semi-private lessons)

Still in effect

No sports games, competitions, team practice, league play or group exercise of any kind is allowed

Trainers must be professional, certified and/or paid trainers who are providing active instruction and correction.

o Passive supervision of a physical activity is not considered training.

Sessions are required to be scheduled by appointment only/ No drop-ins

No groups allowed for adults

Individual workouts without a trainer are not permitted (no-regular bookings or use of equipment/serving)

Ball machine practice without supervision of a trainer is not permitted

Alberta Tennis Centre will staff ball machine court bookings to ensure we are compliant with the Government of Alberta Restrictions.

Serve practice must also be supervised and the intention of the court reservation is serve practice only. Members are not permitted to hit balls individually.

Our hope is that in the coming weeks, the Government of Alberta will allow regular court bookings and life these restrictions.
